Guide to Scouting Acronyms & Terms

Term & Meaning

SM

Scoutmaster: Adult Troop Leader.
ASM
Assistant Scoutmaster(s) - Any trained adult leader.
SPL
Senior Patrol Leader - Scout Troop (or trip) leader.
ASPL
Assistant Senior Patrol Leader - Scout 2nd in command.
ASM
Assistant Scoutmaster Meeting - Adult leader meeting (periodic).
COH
Court of Honor - Quarterly scout awards ceremony.
HALTT
High Adventure Leader Trek Training - Backpack training for adults.
MB
Merit Badge - Earned for rank advancement and individual study.
NYLT
National Youth Leadership Training - Annual scout leadership program.
OA
Order of the Arrow - An honor society for exemplary scouts (youth & adult) which promotes scout camping and cheeful community service. Select scouts
are voted into this group annually by a secret tally of their fellow scouts.
PCM
Parent Committee Meeting - Monthly meeting for all troop adults.
PLC
Patrol Leaders' Council - Monthly meeting of scout officers.
San Diego/Imperial Council - Troop 319's local Boy Scout Admin. office.
YIS
Yours In Scouting - Common closure for scouting correspondence.
Youth Protection Guidelines - Adult training to ensure youth safety. (Click YPG for link.)
Required for Adult Leaders and suggested for all troop parents.
 
 
Other Terms
Definition
Activity Shirt
A Troop 319 emblem shirt issued to scouts, or a Scout Camp shirt, that scouts are allowed to wear for informal scout activities or summer meetings when approved by the Scoutmaster.
Blue Card

Authorization card & proof of completion for merit badges.
Must be signed by the Scoutmaster and an authorized merit badge counselor. Completed cards
are turned in to the Troop Advancement Coordinator. Scouts will receive one section of the card along with their merit badge. Blue card stubs should be kept for future reference and as proof of completion should a sash or patch be lost. Plastic binder sheets used to store baseball cards work great for storing blue card stubs, rank advancement cards, misc. patches, etc.

Camporee
An annual troop competition for each Council District.
Class A Uniform

Cholla
A species of cactus whose detatchable spiny "branches" have an unnatural attraction to scouts in Troop 319.
Troop 319's local Boy Scout Administrative office in Balboa Park.
Court of Honor
Quarterly awards ceremony where scouts receive rank, activity, and merit badge patches.
Field Uniform
also called
First Class or Class "A"
Scouting uniform consisting of an official BSA uniform shirt, scout pants, scout socks, hat and neckerchief. Worn to weekly troop meetings, while traveling to and from scout outings, during fundraising activities, and for scout ceremonies—unless otherwise directed by Scoutmaster. Scouts are allowed to wear "Activity Shirts" to meetings during the summer.
First Class Uniform

The Council District for Troop 319.
Earned for rank advancement and individual study. Scouts can potentially earn approx. 122 merit badges, and must earn at least 21 to attain the rank of Eagle.
A premiere high adventure scout camp in Cimarron, New Mexico.

Salty Rat
Comfort food for pirates and a staple of reality TV.
Also an annual 15 mile canoe trip around Fiesta Island.
Sash

Green sash worn over the shoulder and across the scout uniform on which
merit badges (front) & activity patches (back) are displayed. Worn at COH and other scout ceremonies, and also when participating in troop fundraising activities.

     
Scout Shop
Council-run scout supply store at Camp Balboa in Balboa Park.
Trek
For our purposes, used to refer to a hike, backpack trip, or some other troop expedition.
